31-Boat Casualties/Survivors

Lt.(jg) Delong: Captured in 1942 (south of Mindanao Island) and executed by Japanese while trying to escape to Australia.

Ensign Plant, 1st Class Ballough and 3rd Class Dean: Captured by Japanese after abandoning 31 boat; Ballough and Dean executed; Plant taken prisoner and later died in 1944 aboard prison ship (torpedoed enroute to Japan).

1st Class Culp: Survived war as POW; 30 year navy career and retired as Commander. Deceased 2003.

1st Class Monroe: Survived war as POW; present status unknown.

1st Class Dimaio: Survived war as POW; present status unknown.

2nd Class Harris: Killed in action in 1942 while serving with 34-boat in southern Philippines.

2nd Class Morgan: Survived war as POW; had 30-year navy career and retired as Commander. Deceased 2002.

2nd Class Smart: Survived war as POW; Deceased, 1960s.

2nd Class Caudell: Survived war; present status unknown.

2nd Class Cook: Died as POW in 1943; Osaka Japan.

2nd Class Rooke: Survived war while serving as guerrilla in southern Philippines; Deceased, 1960s.
